About The Designer

Art speaks to Mayyur Girotra. The Indian occasion wear designer’s career began on a vastly different note than where it now stands. A student of hospitality and commerce in London, the New Delhi-born and -raised designer pursued wealth management in Dubai for nearly a decade, before he answered his true calling.

Raised in a home that was immersed in art and culture, Mayyur honed his eye and understanding of design, craft and luxury as a result of his upbringing. He was exposed to homegrown textiles and elaborate weaves early on, through his mother’s penchant for collecting them. His education on Gadwal, Kanjivaram, Patan Patola, Kota, Tanchoi, Kalamkari and Pashmina came from the school of life. Eventually, this served as the foundation and inspiration when he launched his eponymous label in Delhi in 2009 as a a celebration of the Indian legacy, culture, and tradition. Ever since, it has grown into a global brand with presence across India, the USA, London and Dubai.

Today, the self-taught designer creates equally by instinct as he does as a result of research. A perennial thirst for knowledge drives Mayyur, who spends his time engrossed in research about historical works and lost techniques that inform every mood board and collection. His inimitable aesthetic also extends to beautiful spaces, and Mayyur has a keen interest in styling homes, discovering art and collecting antiques.

Along with reinvention and revival, fostering community is essential for Mayyur, which reflects in the inclusive values of his label. An active spokesperson for the LQBTQ+ community, he communicates his support through gender fluid lines in his work.

Mayyur’s innate connection to Indian heritage and patronage for art is evident in every careful seam of both his couture and pret offerings, and even well beyond that as well.
